Why do people damage other people's cars intentionally?

I’m noticing a lot lately on forums that people tend to key or damage forum members’ cars. (particularly luxury cars) But why do people do that? Is there a reason beyond jealousy to do so?

I’ve read a few stories about intentional damage on forums. One of them was that some guy came back to his IS250 and found that it had been keyed throughout the whole right side. Price of repair? $1300.

There was another story in which a Bimmerpost member came back to his new 550i and found some idiot who wanted to hit his car with a shopping cart. The member asked what the idiot was doing. He said that the car was too new and needed some damage. HOW DOES THIS WORK???

And while we’re at it let’s talk about some maddening things. These are comments on a thread about Porsche declaring the end of power wars.

Play an online competitive FPS with microphones, or go to an anonymous off topic image board, and you will understand.

Some people just think it’s funny/ have no respect for peoples property. I always worry about mine since a lot of cars get keyed and dented around here. I have to park a street away just to avoid kids kicking footballs at my car. My gf’s car is pretty messed up down one side due to vandalism/ carelessness.

My parents’ cars used to be in pristine condition until neighbors’ kids could go out into the street, now they all have scratches and dents and that’s why I hate little kids.

Same here, you’d think the parents would at least attempt to keep them in check, but no.

My grandparents recently had their brand new Lincoln keyed on all four sides. In their retiree-dominated town. In a handicapped spot, with their placard displayed. So the person who did it is the scum of the earth, knowing that he was needlessly vandalizing a handicapped elderly person’s second-most valuable possession.

If I was in charge, people who key cars* would be punished by having all of their money and assets transferred to the victim. No jail time, no rehab. They just lose everything and are left to deal with it.

*bro-dozers that roll coal in public are exempt from this. Keying them is encouraged and consequence-free. If one is brought in for repairs of this specific damage, paint shops are required to make it puke green with “I’m a douchebag!” across both sides in Barbie pink Comic Sans.

Some shithead dented the living hell out of my M3’s hood over the course of a few weeks. I bought the car with one dent on the hood, there’s 8 now and a group of scratches. They’ve stopped now, but there’s no camera in the lot at either of my schools to catch the asshole either so I’m SOL.

The person who keyed your grandparents’ Lincoln is probably in his low 20s and wears a flat-bill hat and drinks Red Bull and says “yo dawg old people are useless let’s go screw up their crap”

Can you possibly buy a new hood or wrap it to hide damage?

This is why I always park far away in the parking lot.

Of course I could buy a new hood, but I really don't have the money for that. I don't think wrapping it would hide the damage much either.

People are weak, petty, and powerless, so rather than attempt to improve their outlook, financially or otherwise, they lash out at their neighbors to feel a small but fleeting amount of control.

Also who keys an IS250? That’s like keying a 325i.

This is just a theory. Even if the Yankees were unable to spend the money other teams can’t spend in order to win all the championships they’ve won people would find another reason to hate them. I know this because I live in St. Louis. A decade ago when the Cardinals hadn’t won for awhile we were a good story. A small market team that found a way to win. While we’ve only won twice since then they have been near the top every year. They can’t say it’s the money so they sling mud at the fan base. In other words the have nots are always going to hate the haves.

My dad’s company has a small fleet of OTR trucks and they’re in more than one case right now with people that run into our trucks on purpose to claim damages. One lady tore up her lexus by squeezing between our trailer and a wall. She’s sueing. I want to know how the company is in fault at all.

I’ve actually maintained that my work truck remain unmarked for that reason. When I’m in a company car that covered in stickers and slogans, people are aggressive and fucking rude, and there have been shenanigans afoot with damages as you mentioned. Plus they know (and plan) to go after the company because $$$ so them endangering my life for their payday is of no consequence to them.

I’d like to see an MPG war. Someone said the next M3/M4 will be around 500 hp. They should keep that benchmark and try to make the car lighter and more efficient with each generation. Even Jeremy Clarkson has said that anything past 500hp just feels really fast and it’s hard to tell the difference.

We’ve gotten to the point where we can increase power and MPG at the same time. A 500 hp M3 that can achieve 30 MPG would be amazing.

Because some people are jerks and morons, actually quite a large percentage, and they’re also the people that have nothing productive to do with their time and nothing to lose financially, so the concepts of responsibility and consequences are completely foreign to them.

My old-new boss used to insist on never having any identifying logos or signage on any of our fleet vehicles specifically to fly under the radar of potential vandals.

Well yeah it happens a lot in my country, being third world and all, here having a new-ish 3 series puts you in a spot sort of like someone who drives a new-ish 7 series or similar in the US.

People are assholes, that’s it, that’s why I love so much that my dad has a Mazda 6 instead of the A4, and why I sold my Mini in the first place, you just get hated on for no reason other than people who cannot even begin to imagine a way to make money get jealous of you, even now, I have a regular old TSi Golf, not a GTI, but I got a nail on my tires that was very obviously purposely put there while I was at work (that week my car was only ever parked at my office or my apartment’s parking spot and I got cameras at my place)

On the same building my dad was “nailed” (hah) many times on the Audis and also there was a point in time when wherever he parked a new car on his spot it got keyed, we got like 6 or 7 cars keyed during that time at least once, his were keyed at least 2 times.

And between electric turbos and hybrid technology along side cheaper carbon fiber applications, 30mpg would be the tip of the iceberg.

Chris Harris also wrote an interesting piece about the Bugatti Veyron successor, and I have to say that it makes almost too much sense for it to ever be done lol
